Get your Math 104 exam back ASAP!
If you do poorly on the first Math 104 exam, then you will have several options provided you act quickly.
- Remain in Math 103 and Math 104
If you choose this option, you will need to bring your exam immediately to your Math 103 TA to make an assessment of why you performed poorly. You should also make an honest determination of the extent to which you tried to meet the listed expectations for MCM students:
- Attend all Math 104 and Math 103 classes regularly.
- Work cooperatively in small groups, both inside and (if possible) outside of Math classes.
- Obtain timely help from their teachers whenever material or problems are encountered that they are unable to deal with, either individually or within their group.
- Spend about 1-2 hours each day (Fridays and weekends included) outside of class working seriously on Math 104 and Math 103 homework, material and problems, as well as getting additional help as needed.
- Hand in all assignments on time.
- Arrange schedules (both school and work) that do not conflict with Math classes.
Based on this discussion, you need to develop a plan to refocus your efforts in Math 103 and Math 104 with the following goal: to get a better return on the time that you are investing and to enhance learning.
- Drop Math 103 and Math 104. If you decide to drop these courses, you have the option of joining a Math 050 section if there is room available. This must be done immediately. Your first step is to go to the Mathematics undergraduate course office [Ann Logan room 113 Old Math, 292-8470] to see if there is room in Math 050. You will then need to go to your college of enrollment (UVC or otherwise) to petition the adding of Math 050. . Ann Logan will also give you a copy of the first exam in Math 050. Take it home and work the test out (as if it were a real exam), allowing yourself 50 minutes and no additional resources (text, notes, etc.). If after taking the test you have any questions concerning your performance on any of the problems, you can consult with a tutor in the Math 050 tutor room [CH 132 and 134 M-Th 9:30-4:30, and Fri 9:30-1:30].
- If you elect to not transfer to Math 050, then you have the following options: If you have math course code T, you will need to register for Math 050 at some future quarter. If you have math course code S, you have the option to register for either Math 050 or Math 075 at some future quarter. If you are registered for 16 hours or less, and you drop Math 103 and Math 104 without registering for Math 050, then you will drop below full time student status and run the risk of losing financial aid.
