Description
Founded in 1956, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is an international association of more than 400 independent, liberal arts colleges and universities. CIC works with college presidents, academic deans, other administrators, and faculty to help its member institutions enhance educational programs, improve their administrative and financial performance, and increase their institutional visibility. The Council is known as both a source of practical advice for college leaders and a resource of ideas for educational reform.

Annual CIC programs include the Presidents Institutes (and New Presidents Workshop); the Deans Institute (and New Deans Workshop); regional workshops for faculty; and a workshop on Information Technologies in Pittsburgh. The Council also sponsors periodic national conferences on significant issues, such as the 1995 National Institute on Learning and Service, and occasional retreats for presidential renewal.

In 1993, CIC expanded its programs when the Consortium for the Advancement of Private Higher Education (CAPHE) was made an operating unit of CIC. Created by funders to strengthen the contributions to society of private colleges, CAPHE designs and administers directed-grant competitions, offers technical assistance to colleges, and evaluates and disseminates information resulting from its programs.

CIC also involves its members in major national projects. Current efforts focus on faculty roles and rewards, service learning, and information technologies. Since 1988, CIC has worked with the United Negro College Fund to enhance black college leadership.
