Description
The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) is a nonprofit
membership organization of higher education colleges and institutions. It
is
supported by these member institutions and regional, national, and
specialized
and professional accrediting bodies. Established in 1996, CHEA serves as
a
national advocate for voluntary self-regulation through accreditation.
One of
CHEA's missions is to promote academic quality through the formal
recognition
of higher education accrediting bodies (previously conducted by the
Commission
on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation (CORPA). CHEA is committed
to
coordinating research and debate to improve accreditation, collecting and
disseminating data and information about accreditation, fostering
communication between and among accrediting associations and the higher
education community, and promoting innovation in accreditation policies
and
practices. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation is working to
preserve the quality and diversity of colleges and universities.
