HHMI Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program

HHMI awards four-year grants to biomedical research institutions to improve K-16 science education. The primary program objectives are to address national concerns about the level of general scientific knowledge and interest in both school-aged and adult populations, to provide teachers with research opportunities and access to new teaching tools, and to encourage students to pursue science careers. Projects should encourage interaction between scientists and students through a variety of channels, such as mentoring programs; stimulate students' interest in science through hands-on activities; and push students toward meeting state and local education standards that already are in place.

Sample Award(s): National Research Council (Washington, DC)--to prepare undergraduate students for research careers in the biomedical sciences, $100,000 (2000).

Amount of Grant: $500,000-$2 million for four years
