Faculty Start-Up Grants for Undergraduate Institutions

The program aims to provide funding for new faculty members at non-PhD-granting institutions at the start of their research and teaching activities. While most talented young faculty apply for external funding to support their research, in most cases such support does not ordinarily become available before the end of the first year of appointment. The key feature of the award is an unrestricted research grant that is awarded in September of the year the new faculty member formally begins the first-year appointment. Normally, 10 awards are made each year based on institutional nominations. Nominating materials, including supporting letters, must be received at the foundation by the listed deadline date.

Restrictions: Faculty members who already hold full-time tenure-track appointments at eligible institutions may not be nominated for the program.

Requirements: Institutions that grant a BA or MA degree, but not a PhD, in chemistry, chemical engineering, or biochemistry may submit nominations. Nominees are normally expected to have no more than three years of postdoctoral experience and to begin the first year of their first full-time tenure-track academic appointment at the time of the award.

Sample Award(s): Amherst College--to support faculty research on molecular recognition in biological systems, $12,500. Loyola Marymount U--to support faculty research on the synthesis of 2'deoxyribose nucleosides and modified Prins reaction, $12,500. Vassar College--to support faculty research on photoinduced electron transfer in multimetallic coordination compounds, $12,500. Western Washington U--to support faculty research on atomistic simulation of biomolecules and scanning probe microscopy, $12,500.

Amount of Grant: $20,000

Date(s) Application Is Due: May 15. Receipt of application satisfies deadline date requirements.
